Default NCAA Kickoff fair-catch rule change

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2...aign=editorial

I think this was posted last week. Kickoffs will obviously be different and something additional for the return guys to think about.

They say next season as in this coming season, or 2019?

I've been involved in a lot of cyber-debate about this for around a week.

Most people think it means the days of being pinned back near your goal line are going to be a thing of the past. Most teams will probably take the spot on the 25. Unless they have a Spiller type of returner. But how many do each year?

And soon there may be no kickoffs at all. But, hey, at least we'll get a new debate about the replacement for them!

And the new blocking rules are going to create lots of new penalty calls too. And reviews. Looking forward to normal game lengths approaching 5 hours......

You know they nickel and dime the rules under the two big issues for college football: player safety and game length. Thus far Iím not convinced the targeting rule has effectively prevented dangerous hits to the neck or head, but itís certainly lengthened the game due to the booth review. Then they play around with running clock / play clock etc....

Meanwhile we all have all sat there waiting minutes on end for the tv timeout official to finally blow the whistle and trot back off the field. Donít even get me started on how darn many replays are getting called and how long they can take to decide what to do. They really are trying their best to destroy the game I have loved watching more than any other sport for more than 4 decades. Iím not sure Iíll recognize what is being played on the field within the next 10 yrs (ok maybe a little bit of an exaggeration).

I don't like the rule at all.

They are ruining the game.

Isn't the idea of a kicking game to pin your opponent as deep as possible to their end zone.

What if the kick returner calls for a fair catch, fumbles the ball but is recovered by him or a team mate. Is the ball placed at the 25 yard line or the spot of the recovered fumble?

I'm in no way a fan of this rule, where does this stop? Football is going to be a violent game, it's the nature of the sport. Also, these injuries and things are not the norm but a rarity.

Now we will see less and less kickoff returns. I won't be able to blame the players because why would they return the ball if they know they are guaranteed a spot at the 25 yard line? As mentioned before, the only kick off returns we will see will come from Spiller-caliber players.
