Default The Insider Report

We hope everyone had a great weekend.

It was a great weekend in Death Valley for the annual Orange & White game.

Update on QB Battle

Quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Hunter Johnson both played well Saturday in the Orange & White game, while Kelly Bryant struggled to complete passes down the field. There was a clear difference between Lawrence and Johnson in terms of being able to use Clemson’s weapons at receiver and get the ball down the field.

If you saw Dabo Swinney’s comments following the spring game he made it clear that the door is opening for those battling Bryant for the job.

For those concerned about whether Swinney and the staff will make a change to go to Lawrence or Johnson we have some good news. On Sunday we spoke with a source that had a conversation with one of Clemson’s offensive coaches following the game. The message was clear. The staff will play the quarterback that gives them the best chance to win another national championship, not the one that has been here the longest. If Lawrence or Johnson continue to show that they are in a better position to run the Clemson offense they will get the job.

That is great news for fans that are concerned that Bryant may be the guy based off his seniority and success from last year until the Sugar Bowl.

Based on what we heard from this source we feel much better about the chances of Trevor Lawrence or Hunter Johnson leading the Clemson offense in 2018.

Kier Meredith Injury Update

We have some good news to pass along on freshman sensation Kier Meredith. Friday night Meredith got stiff after hitting the wall in the ninth inning. He tried to see how it felt in the cage on Saturday, but didn’t feel ready to go.

A source tells The Clemson Insider they expect Kier to be ready to go on Tuesday night if Monte Lee decides to put him back in the lineup.

Tuesday’s Starter

Clemson travels to Athens Tuesday night to see if it can revenge last week’s loss to Georgia.

TCI has learned that Travis Marr will get the start for the Tigers.

More on why David Skara decided to turn pro

As you know forward David Skara announced last week he will not return for his senior season and will instead pursue a professional basketball career overseas. Skara will graduate in May with a degree in economics.

TCI learned Skara approached head coach Brad Brownell about his decision a few months back so the coaching staff was not caught off guard and could begin a plan for his replacement. One source told us Skara had no desire to pursue a graduate course study and he wanted to get back to his home in Croatia.

The goal has always been for him to get his college degree in the United States and then head back home and continue his basketball career overseas.

Skara appeared in 26 games this season, including seven starts for Coach Brownell’s squad. He averaged 3.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per contest, while shooting 42.3 percent from the floor in nearly 20 minutes of action per game.

What’s the latest on Mitchell’s and Reed’s status?

Sources are still telling us Shelton Mitchell and Marcquise Reed will more than likely return to Clemson later this spring. Both players will graduate in May with Skara, and then later in the month should find out if they are invited to the NBA Scouting Combine or not.

Mitchell and Reed announced on April 2 they were putting their names in the NBA Draft pool so they could test the waters of the draft. They did not sign with an agent in hopes of returning to school should they feel they will not get drafted in the first two wounds of the NBA Draft.

Players have to make their decision to enter the draft pool by April 22. Combine invites should follow there shortly and May 20 is the day of the combine. Players have until May 30 to decide on staying in the draft or pooling out and returning to school.

Similar to the experiences Jaron Blossomgame encountered in 2016 and Donte Grantham last year, both just want to experience the process and see what it is going to take to put themselves in position to be drafted in 2019.
Keep in mind, because they are still in school, they can only fly out for workouts on the weekends and the visits can only be 48 hours. That limits the number of workouts they can have with teams that might be interested.

Speaking of Grantham, we have been told teams are still interested in him despite his torn ACL. Several teams were impressed with him last year and they were even more interested by the kind of season he was having prior to the injury and then how he handled himself with his teammates and the media after the injury. Scouts were impressed with his upbeat attitude and how he stayed as a positive force and leader in the locker room.

What is Clemson’s plan with its three scholarships?

Clemson was not surprised to hear the news Scott Spencer wanted to transfer. We were told this was his decision and he is not leaving with any hard feelings. It basically came down with him wanting to play. With Reed and Mitchell likely returning, plus the way Aamir Simms and A.J. Oliver came on at the end of the season, he saw the writing on the wall.

TCI was told Clemson wanted Spencer to stay and he was going to have a scholarship, but Spencer wanted a better opportunity to play.

With Spencer and Skara leaving as well as Mark Donnal, who was a graduate transfer, it leaves the Tigers’ basketball program with three scholarships.
From what we understand, the staff could go one or two ways with it. They will bring in a graduate transfer it sounds like. That seems likely to happen.

As for the other two, they are taking the best situation that comes available, meaning they could go with two transfers that will have to sit a year or just sign one transfer and give the other scholarship to someone next year. It is more likely they will sign two transfers that will have to sit out next season.
Speaking of transfers, Clemson will get a visit from former Kentucky player Sacha Killeya-Jones.

Clemson, as TCI reported on Sunday, is one of six ACC schools, and 10 overall, to make the cut for former Killeya-Jones services, one of the top transfers in the country this spring.

NC State, UNC, Wake Forest, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame are the other five ACC schools to make his list. Georgetown, Texas, Arizona State, and Nevada are also getting interest from the post player.

Killeya-Jones was a top 25 player in the country coming out of high school. However, he averaged just 13.7 minutes per game and was not a starter this past season for the Wildcats. The sophomore will have to sit out the 2018-’19 season and will have two years of eligibility left wherever he decides to finish his education.

Killeya-Jones averaged 3.3 points and 2.9 rebounds per game this past season, while also shooting 59.2 percent from the field.

This past weekend, Clemson got a visit from former UNC-Asheville forward Jonathan Baehre. He attended the Orange & White Spring football game. From what we understand, the visit went well.

Baehre (6-9, 195) averaged 7.4 points and 4.6 rebounds while playing in 34 games this past season. He shot 37.3 percent from behind the arc, 54 percent overall and was an 81 percent free throw shooter.

IPTAY upgrade put on hold

Last fall we reported new construction of the IPTAY offices, located on the Avenue of Champions side of Death Valley, were expected to begin after the football season. As you probably have seen in your last few trips to Clemson that has not been the case. We were told the project has been put on hold and that it might start after the 2018 football season.

Please do not copy or paste this information to any other media outlets. As you know TCI is Free so if you know someone that wants the information simply send them to The Rock.

What I saw earlier today is that the former Kentucky 5 star Jones was close to pulling the trigger with UNC before choosing Kentucky. Also that his mom works in the Pharmacy Research at UNC and that is more than likely where he will end up. But hey you'll never get someone 100% of the time if you don't ever try plus he is visiting so you never say never. Also put me in the boat as someone who has NEVER worried about this coaching staff placing seniority over winning.

+1000. We've one of the best (if not THE best) coaching staffs in the country. If Kelly Bryant starts, it will be because he gives us the best chance to win. There is so much going on that the coaches see that we don't. Given their resume, I find it really hard to question any decision Dabo & company makes.

The best chance to win is complicated in this situation. The truth is Clemson can probably win almost anyone they play except maybe Alabama or Georgia with Kelly at QB.
