My favorite place in FL outside of the Keys. Very non-commercial. Famous with sea shell hunters and wildlife observers. Lot's of nature paths.

It has been a number of years since we were last there. Rented bikes almost every day and toured wildlife refuges and a wildlife rehab area. Have stayed at Casa Ybel which is actually on Captiva but close, and they have a good restaurant. But we also would simply ride or walk down Periwinkle Rd and try a new restaurant each lunch or dinner. One we liked a lot that had just opened was Sweet Melissa's. Had to try it since I'm an ABB fan. It was very good. But there are other ones along that road.

EDIT: I'm reminded that Casa Ybel is actually on Sanibel and it is also the place where Thistle Lodge restaurant is. Regardless, the 2 restaurants I like are Thistle and Sweet Melissa's. So there!

Reminiscing and my wife reminds me about Thistle Lodge too. It's on the other drag with good restaurant choices - West Gulf Rd. With Thistle you get a Gulf view too. We've rented kayaks and canoes in previous trips for guided tours of coastal wildlife if you like that kind of thing.

A lot of the daily trips we made on bike or in the boats we packed lunches. There was a Bailey's store or market that did a great job of packing things up neatly. On Sanibel and Captiva there is a Bailey's something or other on nearly every corner it seems like. Family has a long history on the island obviously.

If you are looking for a quiet beach or the best shelling, go to Bowman Beach and walk north toward Blind Pass. That's where we used to hang out. I understand they are dredging Blind Pass again so there may be dredging and equipment around there, but that also can make the shelling better. It's a long beach that curves at Blind Pass so the dredging shouldn't bother you if you are hang out at the Bowman end.

The Pecking Order Fried Chicken

Sweet Melissa's Cafe

Both are excellent

Nothing like having a cold one while watching the sun go down over the gulf

Lived in Naples for 7 years and went to Sanibel often Robert. Try Green Flash, very nice views and fresh seafood every day. Request a table overlooking the water.
