Default Brownell is staying at Clemson (updated with story)

Will is working on the story. If you followed our reporting you should probably already knew this was the likely outcome.

We will release a full background later today on exactly how this all went down.

Here is Will's article: LINK

I hope this works out, but I honestly think this is a HUGE mistake. Another year like this past year, and he's gotta be gone.

This isn't really a surprise.

I had hoped that the new facilities signaled a new era for Clemson basketball - one where we made basketball a priority. This decision with Brownell confirms my suspicions that nothing has changed. Keep patting yourselves on the back for being a "football school," Clemson, all the while mostly neglecting your second most popular sport. Extremely short-sighted.

+1

Unlike the Jack Leggett situation he has not had several years of success followed by a decline over a few seasons

Unlike the Leggett situation, we have a stupid buyout to contend with. DRad probably needs some time to come up with a way to pay the buyout without hamstringing his budget for the next couple years. I'd be willing to bet that he couldn't make a change this year without serious financial repercussions. I also think that maybe he wasn't trying to simply reduce the buyout but maybe restructure it so it was paid out over a longer time period.

The bottom line I think ultimately this will go down like the Leggett situation. Brownell will have a year to make improvements. He probably won't be able to pull it off and we'll look to move on in a year once DRad has a better handle on the money it will take to move on.
