Default Any idea why Clemson doesn't block on PR?

Why don't the Tigers block the opposing teams at the line when returning punts? You typically see the Tigers chip at the line and then send 5 or 6 people to attack the shield, allowing the opposing team to have a free run at the punt returner. About the only time we are able to return a punt is when the punter boots a long one.

I'm sure there's someone out there that understands Special Teams better than I do that can explain why we do this.

Good question. I'll ask Coach Swinney that question tonight.

I feel like the objective for punts over the last several years has been to just catch the ball and let the offense go to work. I feel like there hasn't been an emphasis on actually returning punts since Spiller left.

Is it a matter of field position? I haven't watched for it exactly but it seems like when punters could pin us behind our 10 or so we are more aggressive. When we might assume we could fair catch at the 20 or whatever are may be pretty relaxed. So as CU311 says we expect the offensive to take over and push downfield when there is a buffer behind.

I also notice we let a number of kicks go deep into our territory. I guess we assume it has a good chance of being a touchback.

I have noticed this at times, but to me I've seen where we only send 2-3 guys at the shield more often. It has looked to me that they want to try and give Ray-Ray a chance to return more this year. I'll pay attention to it this week for sure now.

Wondered the same, but it seems like punt blocks are a thing of the past for everyone. Especially, since everyone uses the "shield" now.

I have wondered the same thing. We have speed all over the place which should make punt returns and even my off returns a strength for us but it's not. I seriously cant remember the last time we blocked a punt or took one to the house.

Be cool to hire Frank Beamer for a year to consult on special teams.

The last blocked or close to block punt that I can remeber was Muse (I think) getting a hand on one of Bamas punts. I guess it just depends on schemes and personnel and whatever they spot in film studies.
