Default A Warehouse Filled With Beer

The 3125th. Signal Service Company was at one time located in a small French town. Our compound was near a group of huge warehouses. We used one warehouse to repair and store radios and all types of communication equipment. The other warehouses were utilized by the Quartermaster Corps and these warehouse were stocked with all sorts of items, most of which were destined for the front lines. Those items that were top priority were shipped out as fast as possible. The warehouses and number of trucks in the area looked like one of the present day Walmart distribution centers.

In one of the warehouses was the most beer I had ever seen in one place. It must have been stacked about twelve feet high. The length and width of this stack was amazing. Huge tarps covered the tops of the stack but it was plain to see all the beer was Jacob Rupert. It may not have been an entire boat load but it most certainly occupied most of the space in the ship. This beer was destined for troops at the front but since the need for the other items were most urgent, there was no room for the beer. All available trucks were needed to transport the high priority items.

We were receiving a beer ration on an intermittent basis but the sight of all that beer was very tempting. I don't recall the exact tactic used but somehow several of our men drove one of our trucks to the warehouse and proceeded to load the truck with a vast quantity of Jacob Rupert beer. It was now time to celebrate and celebrate we did. One night we loaded up a lot of the beer and all the officers and enlisted men and went into the little town. There was not a large bistro in the town so we had to make do. There were a few French in the bistro so we invited them to join our party. There was hardly room to move around inside so the area surrounding the bistro was also the party area. It was a great party and we saluted our guest, Jacob Rupert, every time we took a swig.
