Default The Insider Report

It is time for this week’s edition of The Insider Report.

We hope everyone had a great weekend. We are one week closer to Clemson football.

What is the latest on the C.J. Fuller and Jadar Johnson case?

Former Clemson football players Jadar Johnson and C.J. Fuller are still out on bond as they wait for their next court appearance to be set.

After fielding several questions on where the judicial process stood with the two former players, TCI called the solicitors office on Monday for any news on when a trial date will be announced. We were told a court date has not been set at this time and that the prosecution is still building its case.

On May 20, Fuller and Johnson were excused from their appearance in a Pickens County court room in regards to their arrest back on March 28. The two men, along with former Duke football player Quaven Maurice Ferguson, are charged with Armed Robbery and Possession of a Weapon during the Commission of a Crime. The three men allegedly took an undisclosed amount of cash and the victim’s cell phone in the robbery.

Johnson, Fuller and Ferguson were released on a $25,000 bond on March 29.
Johnson is being represented by Columbia based attorney Bakari Sellers, while Fuller is represented by former Citadel quarterback Stanley Myers, who is also based out of Columbia.

Clemson still in discussions about launching the ACC Network

TCI reported last year the ACC was looking into a possible Clemson vs. Georgia Tech game to officially launch the ACC Network.

The ACC Network is scheduled to launch in August of 2019 and ESPN wants Clemson to be a part of it. Clemson, as you know, has won the last three ACC Championships and is the favorite to win a fourth straight this year.

“I do know they want a marquee game to launch the network like the SEC did with South Carolina and Texas A&M,” said Graham Neff, Clemson’s Deputy Athletic Director. “The commissioner has talked about that. We have talked about it with Georgia Tech, but nothing has been finalized.”

Does this mean Clemson vs. Georgia Tech could open the 2019 season on a Thursday night? Possibly!

Next year, the opening week of the college football season will fall in the last week of August. Games for the 2019 season will begin on Thursday Aug. 29. So if the ACC wanted to kick off its new network on a day when everyone had an opportunity to watch it, Thursday makes more sense than on a Saturday.

Clemson has never opened a season on a Thursday night. The last time it opened a season on any day other than a Saturday came in 2007 when it hosted Florida State on Labor Day night. The Tigers won that game 24-18.

By the way, next year’s game against Georgia Tech is scheduled to be played at Death Valley in Clemson.

The Vibe around Clemson Football

We get asked a lot of questions each year about what the vibe is around the Clemson football program. There is a different vibe this summer.

The program is very confident as you would expect heading into the season where they will be ranked as one of the top two teams in the nation. It is similar to 2016 where there is a feeling of unfinished business, but the vibe is different because many on this team know what it takes to win it all.

The confidence level of course changed when Christian Wilkins, Clelin Ferrell and Austin Bryant all made the decision to return for another season at Clemson. One of the key reasons they returned was to go out as national champions. Clemson knows they have a championship defense and one that will rival any that have been seen in the playoffs the last few years.

Last year Clemson didn’t have the answers to replace Watson, Williams and Leggett. This year they have more playmakers and believe the offense can rival what we saw in 2016. That’s a scary thought for opponents.

We have heard some good things about the summer workouts. What happens in the summer goes a long way many times in determining how a team does during the season. This team and staff knows what it takes to be champs and from what we have heard they have put in the work like champs this summer.

Clemson has learned the last two seasons that even a super talented team can lose games if they aren’t focused. The challenge this year once again for the staff will be to make sure the Tigers play at a high level every game. That is not an easy task.

Bottom line is you couldn’t ask for a better vibe right now coming from the football program. Once things get rolling in September we will see if the Tigers are on their way to another national championship. Enjoy the ride. It should be a fun one and believe it or not it won’t always be like this at Clemson.

Will be awesome to open the season with a game in THE Death Valley if that come to fruition. Even more great exposure to the nation and the crowd will be LIT (as the kids say).

FSU 2013 is the model for this season. Leave no doubt and improve on the Championship game with double digit win.
