Jack winning in 1986. We were watching the scoreboard while sitting at the bend on the 13th and the roars were echoing through the trees as Jack was coming down 9, 10 and 11 making birdies. We watch him on the 12th and the groans after his bogey could be heard from all parts of the course when it was posted. We followed him most of the way to 18 and were able to find some unbelievable spots to watch because back then the ropes were closer to the fairways or not in place.

I did not see the shot on 16 but from the roars we thought he had holed it. The roars that echo around the course told you more then the scoreboard. When Seve hit it into the water at 15 the sound coming from the area was ooohhhs that turned into a track meet as people were actually running from 15 over to 17 to follow Jack.

Jack's Tee Shot on 17 possibly grazed my hair. The look in his eyes as he surveyed the shot was one of a steely gaze. He looked down at a root that meant he had to position his foot different from a normal stance, looked up at the tree limb that he needed to flight the ball under and then turned to Jackie and said 9 iron. He took his stance and cut the ball perfectly under the limb onto the green for his last birdie.

I've been to National Championship games but that is still the best sporting event I have attended. I was there for a Tiger win and Phil's 1st win but they did not come close to that day.

You are welcome. Over the years I have run into people who were also on the course and we always discuss where we were on each hole during the round and find out that we probably were elbowing or high fiving each other. That shared experience led to friendships that I still think about today. I use to get together with one guy every year to watch a tape of that Sunday and reminisce over a couple of beverages. The girl he took to the tournament to impress was not a golf fan but they have been married every since.

Jack will always be the GOAT.
