I hate to be a Debbie downer, but unless the Tigers blow everyone out by 50 Iíll bet Bama jumps the Tigers about mid season.
Hard to beat the narrative about that ď Clemson doesnít play anyoneĒ BS!

I disagree with Dabo.
Being ranked #1 is huge if you can hold it!
It makes the Tigers the home team in the playoffs and choice of venue.

That means a lot to the fans who travel as well as the team for number of fans there to support them.

I understand why he downplays it for the team.
But for the fans itís huge!

Agree! It is a big deal from this standpoint.

Well thatís really only true if the playoff committee uses the media poll in their decision-making later in the season. Plus this pre-season poll is going to be ripped up by the time the 1st playoff rankings get released.

For the team I can only see the pre-season ranking providing an early season motivation for the team not to take things for granted. It would be a huge embarrassment to lose to GT in the opener. Honestly though I doubt the players spend hardly any time thinking about it (atleast I hope they donít).

Clemson beats GT 49-10 and Bama beats Duke 55-3 then the media jump Bama to #1

The AP Poll is a starting point and it provides a script for the human element in the CFP Committee. If Clemson rolls through the first half of the schedule and dominates A&M and Syracuse, then Clemson will debut as the No. 1 team in the CFP standings.

So it is important in terms of getting to pick where you want to play. Though Clemson wants to be in the CFP and that comes first, I'm sure, if it can choose, it would want to play in Atlanta instead of Phoenix, again.
