We tend to place a lot of emphasis on the rankings by the various services. The differences between the ratings by Scout and Rivals are sometimes in agreement and sometimes so far apart it makes us wonder how they can see things so different. For example, Bell is the No. 77 WR by Scout and No. 24 by Rivals. Chad Smith is the No. 52 OLB by Scout and No. 11 by Rivals. Johnson is the No. 25 DT by Scout and is not ranked by Rivals. Go figure.

Just added 247 too Joe. Figured it'd be interesting to see how the various recruiting services vary in their rankings.

I'm under the impression that Smith is ranked so high by Rivals because he's done really well at their camps.

....and not just b/c their rankings are the highest overall. They seem the most accurate to me this year. For example, I thought Cervenka had great junior tape, easily 4 star. Only reason I could think of for him being rated so lowly or not rated at all by the other sites is b/c he's a white defensive tackle. Ditto for Tanner Muse at safety who has as much talent as 4 star safety prospects before him. And perhaps also suffering from this prospect rating illness is Chad Smith who IMO still doesn't have the respect he deserves despite his showing at The Opening.

I like to think I have enough knowledge to judge the recruiting services but personally I like ESPN because it provides the most coverage. No matter what you want to be ranked the highest in the service that gets the most publicity.

I also think ESPN has been the most accurate overall. I usually refer to them first for recruit info

I always thought ESPN simply used the Scout ratings. Is there an independent rating for each player and if so, can someone post a link? For example here is what I find for Tucker Israe (3 star not 4 star as in CCtiger's listl:
http://espn.go.com/college-sports/fo.../tucker-israel

And after his phenomenal record breaking year I am still scratching my head why none of the ratings even give him credit for that.

Just "eyeball statistics" for me, but I think factors beyond stats and player performance go into most of the ratings. For example, with Tucker, I wonder if he had more than 12 offers and from some of the "better" schools outside of LSU/UF that he might get that little numerical boost in some systems to push him into the bottom of the 4 star ranks.

Deon Cain is being recruited as a WR? His highlights show something different. A running QB maybe. Would be great in the Wildcat, IMO. Just a pure athlectic(sp) quality to him. Maybe WR is right, I don't know after watching his highlights. Check it out and give me your comments.

He will be playing a position not unlike Artavis Scott probably. WR who plays a lot out of the backfield and takes snaps in some wildcat formations.

Cain will be a beast at wideout. He dominated the summer 7 v 7 camps at the position. He's a natural route runner and has unbelievable hands. I agree with the sites that have him as the number 1 WR for his class. I think he will have a sammy type impact.

Cain will be the best WR Clemson had in along time! Well, at least since Nuk or Sammy, or Martavious, or Mike Williams or Scott....

I know that people have already answered you, but this kid is the future of the wrs at Clemson. He is the must get of this class!!!!!!!!
He is an absolute beast at wr. He plays qb in high school but projects as wr in college and the NFL. He was completely unstoppable during the summer camps and during the 7 on 7 games. The experts were "shocked" at his abilities because he does not play the position in high school. He had some of the best routes run of any of the wrs. Then there are his hands. It is like watching another Nuk catching the ball.
