Default Venables on O'Daniel

Coach Venables said Dorian O'Daniel did really well Saturday against GT, "and that's a game that challenges you in so many ways."

Any insight as to why he played so much? We were at the game and noticed him in there a lot, but I didn't see anyone in front of him get hurt, so we just wondered. He did seem to play really well considering he's not one of those who'd seen it before.

Wiggins plays mostly on three WR sets. You're not going see that from GT. GT also likes to slip their wing backs out into the pass patterns. Goodson might have had problems staying with them. O'Daniel gives you a bigger body than Wiggins and more capable of covering backs out of the backfield than Goodson. He was quite impressive and I look forward to seeing him play more next season.

O'Daniel looked very good. We will be fine at Linebacker next year. A lot of guys are getting good PT.

He is going to be a great one. The defense is going to be better next year than some expect will all the losses.

I expect the LB's and secondary to be very good. The line has some good players coming back Lawson, Watkins, etc. We might not be quite as deep up front, but this is going to be a very good unit.

O'Daniel came on when Goodson got hurt. It was at some point during the second quarter, I think.

Here's the full quote:

"The moment wasn't too big for him...really pleased with him. He was fearless. I always point out the mistakes, I've got to be that guy, but he did really, really well. That's a game that challenges in a lot of different ways and a lot happens like that. You've got to read it the correct way. If you don't, bad things can happen. For the most part, he did real well that way. Physically, he tackled well. Physically, he blitzed well. Super engaged as was able to follow along, in regard to adjustments mid-stream."
