Hopefully Brownell has a plan. Until this past cycle, recruiting hasnít exactly been something to get excited about.

This is exactly what I was worried about when he was hired:

Hopefully, Brad is strategic about the next hire. Iím all for advancing your career but Pearson was here less than a year.

Will, when he was hired you posted that Brownell knew him pretty well. Any sense that things went sideways? It was nice to see the recruiting step up a notch, so his replacement needs to be someone that can build on that momentum.

Appears he moved up to a coaching position which is the normal progression for a coach.

Pearson spent 10 years at UA as Gottfriedís top assistant and the Interim HC there after Gottfried was fired. He then was Foxís top assistant and Associate HC at UGA for 9 years. You can imagine those jobs paid very well. Heís had opportunities to join other programs these past two years but took less paying jobs (Mercer/Clemson) that allowed him to continue to live in Athens so his son could finish his baseball career. His son had several high major offers this year and signed with UGA in the early (fall) signing period.

Thereís certainly no bad blood from either side. Pearson goes from making 90k to 200k+ like he was accustomed. Heís also back on the floor where he belongs as the top assistant for a well respected coach with an opportunity to resurrect a program in his home state.

Why? He quit his only coaching job in less than half a season. He also does not have any meaningful connections that would help in recruiting.

Pearson had very little to do with our current class. The entire staff was all over Hall, and Goins should get credit for Prosper. He found him and got him here.

So what I’ve gathered from the responses is, we hired a 9 month rental who made little to no impact on the team or recruiting and we were aware his departure was imminent the moment he stepped on campus.

That is great decision making from the top.

Hopefully our next director of recruiting is a young up and comer that can relate to the high school kids and plans on sticking around for more than a season.

Itís kind of a made up title and position, itís not like every school has a Director of Basketball Recruiting. We never had one before. Plus there are ncaa rules bout who is an assistant and who is allowed to make personal contact with recruits. A coach plus three assistants can handle the recruiting.

Pearson was hired more in an ďadvisorĒ role and BB knew about Pearsonís family reasons for living in Athens for one more year. Thatís a tough commute, especially making 1/3 the money you made at UGA. This was expected by both parties.

Thank you for your insight. I guess Iím thinking of how immensely that role impacts football recruiting but you are keeping up with way more kids.

actually, i believe Pearson was at least the THIRD guy to hold the recruiting coord title. Lucas McKay held it for a year before he took an on court job at another school. and I believe there was a guy before Lucas who held the title and left for an on court job with Ritchie Riley when he got his HC job.

Strategic wording in the title. My guess is that they would get maybe half the clicks had ďbasketballĒ been added to the title.

It's super annoying that every basketball transaction, whether it involves a coach or player, has to be met with posts questioning and doubting things. The negativity is just ridiculous.

John Rotten summarized Pearson's situation well. As mentioned, he took the job with us at a huge pay cut to be closer to his son. We got a talented and experienced coach for our recruiting director position. Everyone wins. Him taking the job at UAB is not surprising, as he is a floor coach and wanted to get back to being a floor coach. He will make substantially more money in his role at UAB.

Nothing about this should be used to cast judgment, doubt, or criticism of our coaching staff. Nothing was mishandled. Everything is fine.

I disagree that “everyone wins”. Recruiting is about building relationships. The communication is formed over multiple years of getting to know a player and him getting comfortable with the program, facilities, campus life, etc. Several of these kids are recruited as early as their freshman year of HS.

Continuity of a staff is huge on maintaining those relationships especially for a program like Clemson who doesn’t have the history, fan support, and shoe $$$ to throw at these kids.

Let’s call it like it is. Brad helped out a friend and we got a 9 month loaner that did little to push our situation forward.

I, for one, don’t like it and am more than entitled to express my opinion. If you disagree, so be it.
