Default Do our troops need sensitivity training?

So heard this AM that the Pentagon has decided our troops need sensitivity training in Afghanistan since we have Afghanistan soldiers that we have trained killing Americans.

Things that make you go hmmm

Apparently the training includes you can't blow your nose in front of them. You can't give them something with your left hand and you can't let them see the bottom of your shoes.

I know that state department personnel go through training about customs in certain regions, but you can't expect kids just out of high school to do the same. Plus, in front line bases there will always be some gallows humor, just to keep from losing your mind. Training officers and senior NCOs to know the customs is a good idea, but younger soldiers are a different story.

Wonder what "they" know of our customs and religions...nothing, they just think we are infidels.

Mohammed and Jesus were friends and respected one another. I'm sure they are both thrilled with the world today

My question is do people in the Pentagon really think they are shooting our troops because they hand them something with their left hand or show them the bottom of their shoes. If so they shouldn't be training those people and giving them guns.

I personally think the training program got too ambitious. We should have stuck with training small groups of soldiers to help with the combat. Instead we are training everyone from their version of special forces all the way down to the local police. I understand they need to be able to take control of their own defense when we leave, but there is almost no vetting of the recruits we are training. As long as there is no hard evidence of terrorist involvement we are giving them a weapon and training them.

The government should have asked Miami how that worked out. After the riots there they tried to bring in a number of new police officers and the political pressure was so intense that not all the checks were done. Soon they had some serious criminals with badges and weapons running around their city. That was in Miami. Now try checking someone's background in a country where tribal affiliation is more important than the government. You are talking about a disaster in the making.

Agreed.

We shouldn't be there period. Someone remind me why we are there?

Literally? Mohammed lived between 570-632 AD. Jesus was crucified circa 33 AD.

I believe in respecting another person's religious beliefs. That does not mean I agree with them. I also expect the same in return. The world has created a double standard that expects respect toward Islam, but denies Christians the same in return. So-called good Muslims have not had the courage to oppose the fanatics.

What I would like the U.S. to do will not be done and it is certainly not consistent with New Testament teachings. I think we should withdraw our troops from the Middle East. Then, we should send a letter to every government in the world. The letter should simply state, "The United States will defend the lives of its citizens throughout the world. If you harm Americans or support the efforts of those that harm Americans, we will treat you as our enemy. We will use all of the forces of our nation to destroy you." Then, do it.

* As an historical note, the North Vietnamese always came back to the negotiating tables when we bombed Hanoi.

To me you have to start treating the Afghan army and police as as the possible enemy. Troops need to be instructed to approach them all as possible enemy combatants. I'm not sure if there is even a way to train them in this kind of environment. I would seriously scale back the training operations and I would start restricting their movements at bases with live ammo. In the field it is a cluster f@$% in the making, and I don't see anyway around it short of pulling everyone out.

The reason our troops are over there is so we won't have trouble over here. It's really that simple. Major props to all of our troops.
