Apparently a good man who made a split second mistake has to fall on his sword. I worry for a country where an apology is no longer good enough. What about the immature player who wrote the offensive term? What lesson has that person learned, what corrective discipline is being administered?

when does this cancel culture shift to burning them at the stake? surely just losing a job can't be enough these days.

I think there is more behind the scenes here. Does't pass the smell test. Something else must have happened and this was the excuse to allow him to save face. There is no reaction from the players on his departure. Gundy was an old school coach and probably wasn't fitting in with Venables system.

If this is truly the reason he is leaving, then Iím sad. This surely cannot be the reason.

Agreed, if this is the only reason then it's pretty baffling. Apologize and move on. Resigning seems like a huge overreaction.

Venables does have the Pearman situation to look back on. The story if true is similar. Maybe the thought that recruiting will be greatly impacted is a legit concern.

I had not considered this angle but it would make sense.

Such a shame. I would fire an employee that endangered other workers or lied or was incompetent. If I understand it, and there is no additional information that was left out, he read something out loud that he did not write, but didnít catch the foul word until he had spoken. Is that what happened? If so, then our world is falling apart. Someone says a bad word and loses a job, but someone commits a violent crime and they are released by prosecutors.

I'm wondering if this was a case where Brent was told to find an on field role for a long time coach and former Sooner player and this was his chance to get rid of him.

It happens. Ask Hatfield, West, and Bowden.

Venables has explained that Gundy spoke the offensive word several times so it wasnít just a slip. Now itís conflicting accounts of how the incident played out.
