I realize the assistant coaches Alabama has lost over the last several years are good in their own right and are sought by other teams, but I have heard or read on several occasions that some are eager to leave because Saban is known as a tough coach for which a coach can work. Anyone else know if this statement has merit?

Joe, that's been what I've heard for many years. Working for him is a tough gig so it's no surprise that these assistants aren't sticking around. He's very demanding.

I think Saban attracts the type of coach that goes there looking for a short stay. They know it's going to suck, but they also know an upgrade is on the horizon. Assistants use him like going to coaching college, and then they go find a real home.

Coaches do not like working in that program. They do not see their family and Saban is brutal to work for.

I have worked for demanding bosses, but the good ones make you into a better leader or officer or coach, whatever the context is of your relationship and your job. There is a right and a wrong way to demand excellence.

I watched an ESPN segment with Marty Smith. It was about Saban playing basketball at lunch with his assistant coaches. It struck me as being pretty lousy that he was the one that interpreted all of the rules so that he won these games. The segment was done in good humor, but the former coaches that interviewed made it perfectly clear Saban's team always won.

I know that might seem trivial to mention that story, but what does that say about Saban as a person that he feels he has to control the outcome of a pickup game of B-ball?

Key played at Tech from 1997-2000 under George O'Leary. Tech fans are excited to have him back in Atlanta. He was considered the #2 recruiter in the nation by a recruiting publication while at Alabama.
