Default Notebook: Final practice of camp (defense and special teams)

Clemson concluded fall camp Tuesday afternoon at the Poe Indoor Practice Facility in Clemson. The media was allowed to watch the first four periods of practice.

Here are some of the notes we got on the defensive side of the ball and special teams. This is not any indication of a depth chart, it is just what I saw when watching the drills.

*Drew Swinney was holding for his brother Will Swinney on kicks. He was holding for B.T. Potter and Steven Sawicki on the first five kicks.

*Nolan Turner, Tanner Muse, Baylon Spector, Denzel Johnson, Isaiah Simmons, Chad Smith, James Skalski, Mike Jones, Brannon Spector and K’Von Wallace worked as the first-team kickoff coverage unit. Xavier Thomas was working with the second team kick coverage.

*When the defensive line started their drills, Justin Foster and Logan Rudolph were the first defensive ends up, along with Nyles Pinckney and Jordan Williams at defensive tackle.

*Thomas and K.J Henry were the next defensive ends up, along with Xavier Kelly and Tyler Davis at defensive tackle. Defensive end Justin Mascoll lined up next with defensive tackles Darnell Jefferies and Ruke Orhorhoro.

*At linebacker, Simmons, Smith and Skalski were the first three up, followed by Jones, Jake Venables and Baylon Spector.

*At cornerback the rotation was A.J. Terrell, Sheridan Jones. Then it was Derion Kendrick and LeAnthony Williams. Mario Goodrich and Andrew Booth were next and then there was Tyler Herbstreit.

*At safety Wallace and Muse were first and were followed by Turner and Johnson, then Lannden Zanders, Jalyn Phillips and Ray Thornton.

*Xavier Kelly looks like a different guy this year. He has really changed his body.

*Goodrich and Kendrick were both wearing green jerseys today, which means they practiced but only participated in individual drills.

Great news on Xavier Kelly. Glad he stuck it out, was willing to change positions, and hopefully this year it starts paying dividends.

Coach V has said several times that there’s 5 co-starters. I expect there’re to be some separation as the season goes. Hopefully it means LR has raised his game .... competition is good

Nothing at all. Thomas will play a lot at DE, Venables said that last week.
