Default The Insider Report

It is time for this weekís edition of The Insider Report.

We hope everyone had a great weekend.

Top 2021 Prospects Heading to Clemson

On Thursday, the "dead period" in college football recruiting concludes and the "quiet period" begins, meaning prospects will be allowed to hit the road for visits until the next dead period which runs from Aug. 1-31.

A reminder that Clemson will host several class of 2021 prospects during the quiet period. Hopefully you saw our story today reporting that Hopewell (Va.) four-star athlete TreVeyon Henderson, who received an offer from Clemson a couple of weeks ago, is set to visit on July 30.

The Tigers will also play host to Steilacoom (Wash.) five-star Emeka Egbuka, the nationís No. 1 rising junior athlete, this coming Saturday on July 27. Clemson offered Egbuka as a wide receiver in June, joining Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Ohio State, Stanford, UCLA, Washington and others on his offer list. Following his Clemson visit, Egbuka will travel to Alabama and LSU for visits on July 29 and July 31, respectively.

TCI has confirmed that a notable 2021 quarterback will visit this week. Dacula (Ga.) Hebron Christian Academyís Colten Gauthier is set to arrive on campus Thursday around 2:30 p.m.

The Tigers are showing significant interest in Gauthier, having visited his school on two separate occasions during the spring evaluation period. Clemson wanted him to throw at the Dabo Swinney Camp in June but he was not able to make the date because of a planned family event. According to Gauthier, the Tigers have been communicating with his head coach Ė former longtime Indianapolis Colts center and six-time Pro Bowler Jeff Saturday Ė for a while, and invited Gauthier to visit Thursday.

Gauthier told us that he plans to visit Clemson for a game this season, too. He has a loose timeline for his commitment, saying it could happen as soon as this fall or as late as the end of May next year.

Clemson has only offered two quarterbacks in the class of 2021 thus far: Eli Stowers of Denton (Texas) Guyer and Drake Maye of Charlotte (N.C.) Myers Park. Stowers committed to Texas A&M on July 2, and Maye committed to Alabama on July 17.

5-star Weekend Ahead with All In Cookout

Itís that time of year again Ė Swinney and the Tigers are set to hold their marquee summer recruiting event, the All In Cookout, on Friday evening.

As you probably know, the All In Cookout is intended to be a fun, laid-back social gathering for Clemsonís commitments and a select few priority targets, their families, and the coaching staff. The cookout is designed to help the Tigers emphasize their family culture and usually features activities such as a wiffle ball home run derby and some sort of food-eating contest.

Most of Clemsonís 2020 commits are expected in town Friday, along with several of the Tigersí top remaining targets in this cycle.

Two of Clemsonís wide receiver targets are slated to be in attendance, in Phenix City (Ala.) Centralís E.J. Williams and Clearwater (Fla.) Academy Internationalís Ajou Ajou.

Williams, a longtime target, is still scheduled to announce his commitment decision on Aug. 24. He has taken official visits to Tennessee, LSU and Auburn, but Clemson remains in the driverís seat heading into the cookout.
Like Williams, Ajou was most recently on campus during the Swinney Camp in June. Ajou picked up an offer from the Tigers following his performance at the camp. Nebraska hosted Ajou for an official visit in late June and appears to be Clemsonís chief competition.

One of the five-stars that we have confirmed is planning to be at the cookout is the nationís No. 1 tight end, Arik Gilbert of Marietta (Ga.). This will be his first known visit to Clemson since he attended the Tigersí elite junior day back in January. Gilbert, who has long been a heavy Georgia lean, plans to take official visits in the fall before he makes his decision. The Tigers have their work cut out for them if they are to make up ground on the Bulldogs, but the cookout presents a great opportunity. Alabama and Tennessee are other schools in the mix.

Upland (Calif.) five-star linebacker Justin Flowe will also make his highly anticipated return to Clemson for the cookout following a brief visit to campus in March. We have said for a while that the Tigers are in a good spot with Flowe, though there is a ways to go as he is in no hurry to make his decision. He has been getting the full-court press from Clemsonís commits and Friday will be a great chance for him to bond with the Tiger commits.

Last but not least, as we reported in our Insider Report a few weeks ago, Columbia (S.C.) Hammond School five-star defensive end Jordan Burch is expected to be back on campus for the cookout.

We have said for a while that Burchís attendance or lack thereof at the cookout would give a signal of where the Tigers stand. Burch keeps his recruitment and what he is thinking very close to the vest, but this visit for the cookout reaffirms that Clemson is still very much in the mix.

Burchís recruitment is a battle between Clemson and South Carolina, with Alabama and Georgia also in contention, and this one could go in a lot of different directions. If Burch makes it to campus as expected, it will be a critical weekend in his recruitment and give the Tigers a great chance to make a move.

New IPTAY Center is coming along fast

As a lot of you already know, IPTAY is getting a new building that will be located on the northwest end of the stadium, just as the old one was. In the meantime, the IPTAY offices have been relocated to the West End Zone, where they have been since the end of last November.

Members of the IPTAY staff and the ticket office got a first look at the new IPTAY Center last month. The Clemson Insider has learned the new building is ahead of schedule and is set to be completed by November.

The IPTAY Center is the latest project in the ongoing efforts to expand and enhance the Clemson University athletic facilities and serve as the long-term home for IPTAY and the Ticketing staff. Past projects include the Allen N. Reeves Football Complex, the baseball player facility, the Littlejohn Coliseum renovation, new soccer practice fields and most recently the construction of the new Duckworth Family Tennis Center.

The new IPTAY Center project is one that will fulfill the needs of IPTAY and the Clemson University Athletic Ticket office staffs well into the future. Plans for the new building include the addition of a third floor, substantial office additions, many modern updates including fully wired offices and collaborative meeting spaces, a two-story lobby entrance and an outside deck space for events and game day operations.

The coaches deserve gold, too

Earlier this month, the Clemson menís basketball team brought back the gold medal for the United States at the World University Games in Italy. It was a proud moment for Clemson fans everywhere. The Tigers went 6-0 in the Games and won USA just its second gold medal since 2005.

However, gold medals at the Games were just awarded to the players. Coaches and administrative staff did not receive one. However, Clemsonís athletic administration plans to change that. TCI has learned Clemson has already purchased gold medals to give to the coaching staff and basketball administrators for their part in bringing the gold back to the United States as well.

Choice on injured reserve

Former Clemson running back Adam Choice has been placed on injured reserve by the Seattle Seahawks, TCI was told last week. Choice, who signed as a free agent with Seattle after the 2019 NFL Draft, tore his Achilles and will miss the entire 2019 football season.

On May 29, during OTAs, Choice was waived by the Seahawks with an injury destination. He has since been placed on the IR list, which means he will receive a steady paycheck from the Seahawks this season and will be invited back to off-season training camp next winter and spring.

Choice began is career at Clemson as one of the top running backs in 2014, before tearing his ACL at Boston College. He redshirted the 2015 season to continue his rehab and then was a reserve running back for Clemson in 2016, í17 and í18.

A respected leader in the locker room, Choice helped Clemson to national championship runs in 2016 and 2018. He rushed for 1,250 yards in his Clemson career on 239 carries. He also had 22 receptions for 179 yards. He played in 45 games for the Tigers during his career.

Lots of Oregon reporters saying Flowe is going to be at Oregon this weekend. It'll be interesting to see if he makes the trip.

Crazy that they wouldn't include coaching staff in medals. Classy move by Clemson to correct that.

The latest information we have is that Burch will be on hand for the cookout.

There is some info that he may head to Georgia on Saturday for their event.

The cookout is an event on Friday. We expect Burch will get the full impact of the cookout visit unless something changes.

The UGA moderator at Dawgnation just confirmed that they expect Burch on Saturday at their big weekend.

As you mentioned, this is not a big deal for or against us. We should be able to give him all he needs to see on Friday and he is not making a decision any time soon, regardless.

If you saw our reporting back during the week of The Opening Finals when we broke the news that Burch would attend the cookout you know that we were told then that he would be on campus for a couple of days.

That hasn't really changed as we have heard he will be on campus Thursday and Friday. We will of course will wait and see if that happens as is expected.

Hopefully Burch will be on campus long enough to spend time with the rest of the 2020 class, as well as the remaining targets, like Flowe, Gilbert, and EJ Williams... Imo Burch is the best prospect in the country
