Default The Insider Report

It is time for this week's edition of The Insider Report.

We hope everyone had a great weekend. It was a big weekend for the baseball team with a series win over No. 13 Virginia Tech. We hope you enjoyed our coverage from Indy of the Tigers NCAA Tournament experience. We were pleased to be the only Clemson media outlet that made the trip.

More on why Taylor reopened his recruitment

As you know, a Clemson basketball signee in the 2021 class will no longer be joining Brad Brownell’s program. Wake Forest (N.C.) Heritage three-star shooting guard Lucas Taylor announced Monday night that he has requested and been granted a release from his national letter of intent with the Tigers.

We reached out to our sources and we were told Taylor was concerned about playing time. He did not like the way Clemson used Al-Amir Dawes and Nick Honor this season. He thought they played together a lot and that would affect his playing time.

Be prepared to see this happen a lot in college sports now. One of our sources told us with the new transfer rule, this will happen more often. If a young player thinks the grass might be greener somewhere else, they will just jump in the transfer portal.

Five-star Safety Ready to Announce

A couple of top Clemson targets in the 2022 class are set to reveal their college decisions this week.

One of those is Jefferson (Ga.) five-star safety Malaki Starks, who will announce his commitment on Thursday during a 5:30 p.m. ceremony at his local civic center.

Alabama, Clemson and Georgia are the finalists for Starks, but his decision has come down to the Tigers and Bulldogs.

UGA has long been considered the leader for Starks because of his proximity to the school, family members that favor the Bulldogs and the fact he has visited Athens multiple times.

However, as we have reported, Clemson has garnered serious consideration from Starks and been legitimately in contention. He has a family tie to the Tigers as his uncle, Jerome Williams, played tight end under Danny Ford in the late 1980s.

Based on what we gathered, while we would not rule out Clemson until Starks formally makes his decision, odds continue to be in UGA’s favor and we believe the Bulldogs are still the favorite to land his commitment heading into his announcement.

Walker's Announcement Days Away

The other priority Clemson target who will let the world know where he is going this week is Salisbury (N.C.) four-star linebacker Jalon Walker.
Walker will choose between his six stated finalists – Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, North Carolina and Ohio State – during a ceremony at his high school on Sunday afternoon.

Clemson has been the team to beat for Walker, with UGA and UNC presenting the biggest competition. He made trips to check out both of those schools last fall, in addition to traveling to Charlotte in December to see the Tigers play Notre Dame in the ACC Championship Game.

Walker has been on Clemson’s campus several times over the last handful of years and has built a strong bond with defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Brent Venables, while head coach Dabo Swinney has been involved in his recruitment as well.

Meanwhile, Walker also has a close relationship with Clemson defensive end K.J. Henry, whose father, Keith, served as the defensive coordinator under Walker’s father at Catawba College from 2013-16. Walker’s father, Curtis, has been the head coach at Catawba since 2012.

There is some drama leading up to Walker’s announcement as, from the latest we’ve heard, he has yet to inform any of his suitors of his decision. With that said, our forecast for Walker remains sunny right now, and we haven’t heard anything to make us feel compelled to change that. If Walker were committing today, we still believe Clemson would be the choice. However, he is not committing today so we will have to see if anything changes in the coming days.

Update on Davis Sharpe Injury

Clemson's Davis Sharpe did not start last weekend due to an injury. Sources tell TCI the injury is an elbow injury.

We should have more of a definitive answer any day now on how long Sharpe will be out. At first the worst was feared by one of our sources but on Monday we were told that might not be the case.

Update: The good news is Sharpe came in to play first base in the ninth inning as a defensive substitution Tuesday night.

Please do not copy or paste this information to any other media outlets. As you know TCI is Free so if you know someone that wants the information simply send them to The Rock.
