Default Wednesday Shrine Bowl notes

Nyles Pinckney drew some not so favorable reviews after yesterday's workouts. Today, he looked pretty strong. Played hard, displayed a good motor. He was particularly disruptive during the inside period.

John Simpson and Cade Stewart continue to work as the starters left tackle and guard, respectively. Seems to me like they've developed a good rapport with one another. Simpson is still kind of finding his way as a left tackle, but he seems to be a little more comfortable than he was when I saw him yesterday morning.

Cornell Powell continues to draw rave reviews from just about everyone I've talked to/overheard talking. The North Carolina coaching staff loves the guy. That's probably why they're using him in the role they are: out of the slot, in the backfield, as a return man, etc.

As we wrote several times back in the summer during Dabo Camp, Powell is pretty close to being a physical specimen, about as close as you can be as a high school wide receiver. He sort of reminds me of Anquan Boldin, a big, strong guy who can play out of the slot. Powell isn't a burner, but he isn't slow.

I suspect he'll play the 5-position at Clemson, but he could also work at the 9. I think Clemson could win with him playing either one of those positions.

The most impressive looking player on the hoof is Javon Kinlaw. The Goose Creek prospect is working at defensive end this week, though the consensus among a lot of folks in the industry is that he's better suited to play offensive tackle.

Physically, Kinlaw might be the most impressive looking guy I've seen at the Shrine Bowl since I started covering the practices in 2009. That includes Jadeveon Clowney.

Laurens safety Thomas Jones (6-2, 190) looks like a Clemson safety, with his height and length. He's committed to play baseball for Vanderbilt, so apparently he's a really good ball player, too.

Greer cornerback Troy Pride gets the biggest personality award. He's pretty talkative. Can get pretty loud.

Looks like Shai Werts has a role for the South Carolina team like Powell does for North Carolina. The Newberry quarterback, who's committed to Georgia Southern, is doing all sorts of different stuff.

And, finally, some video of John Simpson/Cade Stewart working against Nyles Pinckney during the goal line period.

What's the deal with Kinlaw? Is he pretty much a lock to SC?

Why isn't Dexter Lawrence at the Shrine Bowl?

I heard that Kinlaw may have to go to junior college for at least a year due to academic reasons

Kinlaw will probably do the JUCO route....or Louisville. He needs to grow up a bit, but the dude is an absolute monster...he just needs a good environment. Otherwise, you'll probably never hear from him after this year.

Yep on the grades for Kinlaw.

Lawrence backed out because of his scheduled announcement date.

Can someone tell me what the 5 and 9 positions are? Slot and deep WR?

Number positions are used here mostly. I've always translated them from center out like you suggest using words I grew up with:
2 = "Field"
5 = "Slot"
9 = "Boundary"

Seems like people have their own preferences. I've seen others who prefer Edge to Boundary, for example.

It's how Morris numbers the wide receivers.

Think of it like this, the 2011 starting three:

2-Sammy Watkins

5-Jaron Brown

9-DeAndre Hopkins
