Default Dabo Camp Insider III

As expected, Tuesday's first practice had a lot more prospects working out for the Clemson coaches.

The headliner of the first session, John Simpson, wasn't participating in camp drills this morning, but he did return to the practice fields as an observer. At the start of position group work, I saw Simpson sharing a few laughs with Clemson staffer Thad Turnipseed.

Florence-Wilson 2018 defensive end Xavier Thomas spent a considerable amount of time speaking with Brent Venables before the campers began to stretch. Marion Hobby also stopped by to exchange greetings with the big-time prospect, who already has offers from Florida State, Georgia and Tennessee.

Haven't heard anything that would suggest something, one way or another, but I've got to think that Clemson will offer before he leaves today. I had to remind Robert a couple of times that Thomas is a 2018 kid...he looks impressive.

Another good-looking instate prospect up for today's camp is 2017 defensive end Chrishawn Wilson, who's from West Florence High School.

Pendleton 2017 defensive end Brad Johnson has a solid highlight reel from his sophomore year. He's in today and spent time with Venables during the stretch period.

Also saw Dabo Swinney chatting with 4-star athlete Malcolm Askew, a 2017 prospect from McCalla-McAdory in Alabama.

Christian Tutt, a 2018 cornerback from Thomson, Ga. Tutt is working out with a defensive back group that's full of prospects today.

Greer cornerback Troy Pride Jr., a 2016 commitment in the Virginia Tech class, wasn't on the field with the group, but he's on campus for a visit. Pride also has offers from Notre Dame, UNC and Maryland.

Included in the defensive back group are Montrae Braswell, a 2018 cornerback from Avon Park, Fla., who's with the Unsigned Preps group. Same with Timarcus Simpson, a 2018 cornerback from Tampa-Sickles, where Ray Ray McCloud went.

Speaking of McCloud, his little brother, 2018 athlete Jordan McCloud is on campus today. The younger McCloud is on crutches and isn't working out today, but he's gotten some attention from Dabo Swinney and Tony Elliott.

The Unsigned Preps group has 40 kids with them on their annual bus tour. In addition to Clemson, they've been to UNC and Georgia Tech. They also attended the Michigan satellite camp in Florida. Before heading back home, they'll make one last stop at Georgia's camp.

Up from the Jacksonville area are a group of prospects, led by former NFL players Cleo Lemon and Drayton Florence...hoping to have some more information on a few of their prospects later this afternoon.

Other notable defensive backs include 2018 cornerback Derrik Allen, a 6-foot, 175-pound prospect from Marietta-Lassiter (Ga.) with offers from Georgia, Kentucky and Louisville. Lyn Strange looks the part of the lengthy safeties that Brent Venables has targeted. Strange is a 2017 prospect from North Florida Christian in Tallahassee with offers from Louisville and Miami.

There are a handful of notable wide receivers in today. Back from yesterday are OrTre Smith and Jayson Hopper. Joining them are Daqun Green, a 4-star from Tampa Bay Tech, the same school that Deon Cain attended. There's also Trey Parker, a teammate of Tutt at Thomson High School in Georgia.

Brent Venables has some solid linebackers in his group, one of them being his son, a 2018 prospect from Daniel High School. Jake Venables camped at Oklahoma last week and received pretty favorable reviews.

Another instate 2018 linebacker in today is Khalid Jones, who was in town earlier this spring for the Orange and White game.

TCI will head back out to the practice fields again this afternoon at 2:30.

Dumb question but seems like a lot of DBs getting attention. Is that "luck of the draw" (ie that is want TCI happened to watch the DBs), reflective or a strong position group at this particular session or a big need for us?

Combination of them all.

There were several notable DBs in today, top to bottom is was probably the strongest group we've seen at camp this year. The volume is greater, too.

Plus, with the need for a guy in the 2016 class, we were tracking several of those guys, because they were/are offer candidates.
