Default The Insider Report

It is time for this week’s edition of The Insider Report.

We hope everyone had a great weekend. Life after football begins, but spring practice begins in just under six weeks.

More on Official Visits

As we’ve reported, most of the summer enrollees in Clemson’s No. 1-ranked 2020 signing class made their official visits to Clemson over the weekend: Clearwater (Fla.) Academy International wide receiver Ajou Ajou, Birmingham (Ala.) Briarwood Christian offensive lineman Trent Howard, Lexington (Ky.) Frederick Douglass offensive lineman Walker Parks, Cedartown (Ga.) running back Kobe Pryor and Canton (Ga.) Creekview offensive lineman John Williams.

Fifteen of the Tigers’ 23 total signees arrived on campus in early January as mid-year enrollees. The other three summer enrollees -- running back Demarkcus Bowman, cornerback Malcolm Greene and defensive lineman Tre Williams -- took their official visits prior to the December early signing period as it worked best with their respective schedules.

The rest of this historic class will enroll in June.

Elite Junior Day Preview

This Saturday, January 25, the Tigers will host one of their biggest recruiting events of the year – their annual elite junior day.

A lot of the nation’s top talents in the 2021 class are expected to make their way to Tigertown this weekend. TCI has confirmed that at least four five-star prospects are planning to be on hand, along with a bunch of other highly regarded recruits.

One of the headliners is Fort Worth (Texas) All Saints Episcopal five-star offensive tackle Tommy Brockermeyer, a consensus top-10 player for 2021 according to the major recruiting services.

In early December, Brockermeyer announced a top five of Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, LSU and Texas. He then picked up an offer from Georgia in mid-January and subsequently added the Bulldogs to his finalists.

After releasing his short list last month, Brockermeyer had this to say to TCI regarding why the Tigers are among his top contenders: “The last couple years Clemson has been dominating. When I visited there, I had such an amazing time with the coaches. Clemson has that family feeling that no other place has.”

Brockermeyer will be accompanied by his twin brother, 2021 four-star center James Brockermeyer. The Tigers have not offered James to date.

The Brockermeyer brothers previously visited Clemson last June.

A couple of other offensive linemen are slated to visit Clemson on Saturday as well: Fairfax (Va.) Robinson Secondary four-star Tristan Leigh and Cordova (Tenn.) Evangelical Christian three-star Dietrick Pennington. Pennington received an offer from the Tigers at the Dabo Swinney Camp in June, while Leigh is a strong candidate to collect an offer this weekend.

The other five-star prospects we have confirmed the planned attendance of are Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga quarterback Caleb Williams, Matthews (N.C.) Weddington all-purpose back Will Shipley and Greensboro (N.C.) Dudley defensive tackle Payton Page.

Williams is the only uncommitted quarterback in the 2021 class with an offer from Clemson right now. He visited Death Valley for the Texas A&M game in September, then got the offer in October.

Shipley earned Clemson’s first running back offer for 2021 last July after working out at the Swinney Camp. The Tigers got him back on campus twice during the season for the Texas A&M and Wake Forest games.

As for Page, he announced a top five of Clemson, LSU, North Carolina, Oregon and Tennessee two weekends ago. He isn’t planning to make his decision until his senior year, but Clemson is in a good spot right now.

Other prospects who have told TCI they are planning to attend the junior day are Brentwood (Tenn.) Ravenwood four-star tight end Jake Briningstool, Lakeland (Fla.) Christian School four-star defensive end Cade Denhoff and Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco four-star wide receiver Beaux Collins.

Collins said recently he was hearing the most from Clemson and Stanford, along with LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Southern Cal, and that he was looking to commit by “maybe the end of the summer, if not sooner.”

The Tigers, meanwhile, are considered the frontrunner for both Briningstool and Denhoff entering the weekend.

In addition to the targets, all of Clemson’s 2021 commitments are planning to be at the junior day.

As always, visitor lists like this one are subject to change with additions or scratches. We would not be shocked if one or two surprise visitors show up as well.

2021 TE Visits Tigers

Clemson also welcomed a top 2021 prospect to campus this past weekend. Napa (Calif.) four-star tight end Brock Bowers visited on Sunday as part of a swing that included stops at LSU on Friday and Georgia on Saturday.

We will have more on Bowers’ visit to Clemson later, but he told TCI that he enjoyed his time on campus seeing what the Tigers have to offer. “It went good,” he said. “The facilities were amazing though.”

Bowers has yet to report an offer from Clemson, but has other offers from schools such as Arizona State, Auburn, California, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oregon, Penn State, Southern Cal, Tennessee, Utah and Washington.

As a junior this season, Bowers was credited with 39 receptions for 1,098 yards and 14 touchdowns in nine games.
