Default The Insider Report

It is time for this week’s edition of The Insider Report.

We hope everyone had a good weekend and hope everyone is making it through these difficult days.

Strong Finish Needed to Make NCAA Playoff

With the sweep of Wake Forest Clemson sits at 12-12 in the ACC and 18-18 overall. RPI and other metrics some look at are not going to be the determining factor on whether the Tigers can slide into the NCAA Tournament.

The key this year as has been before is how the Tigers finish in ACC play. The Tigers will need to finish at least .500 in conference play so that means at least 18 wins.

The Tigers have four ACC series remaining. They host Louisville this weekend and then head on the road to Georgia Tech and Florida State. Clemson finishes the season hosting Duke.

At 12-12 the Tigers are currently tied with NC State for ninth place in the conference but have a series win over the Pack.

The last time Clemson didn’t make the NCAA Baseball Tournament was in 2008, the only time the Tigers missed the postseason under coach Leggett. Before that the last time was 1986.

Will Tigers Host First Softball Regional?

Clemson softball is having an amazing season, especially for a second year program. The Tigers are riding a 17 game winning streak and currently are in first place with just one series remaining.

That certainly means Clemson should be set to host their first ever Regional, right? Well that is certainly a possibility but not a certainty according to a source we spoke with over the weekend. To be honest I was a little surprised myself.

According to the source we spoke with it would almost be a certainty in a normal year, but this year with the nation recovering from the pandemic things are a little different.

We are told the NCAA is trying to do their best to try to limit the travel as much as possible for teams. There are a number of top programs in the Southeast and a good number out West.

If Clemson can win the regular season over Florida State and then beat them if they play in the ACC Tournament they should certainly be positioned to get the nod over the Noles. The two teams had a series canceled earlier this year.

So there is still some work to do for the softball team to lock down their first every Regional host.

The number of fans that would be allowed is also a question. Will the NCAA mandate the crowd size like they did at the NCAA Basketball Tournament or will they leave it up to the locations of the Regionals. One source told us they believe it is likely the NCAA will set a standard for the crowd sizes. If that is the case it likely not be played in front of a packed stadium.

How cool would it be for Clemson to host and for the stadium to be rocking?

Injury Update on Davis Sharpe

The Clemson pitching staff could use a boost and one might be on the way at some point down the stretch.

Davis Sharpe last pitched against North Carolina on March 12. Before being injured Sharpe was the Friday night starter all season.

There was initially concern that he might need surgery on his injured elbow immediately. He has been able to return to the lineup at first base and as a designated hitter. Saturday Sharpe hit a walkoff two-run home run to win the game for the Tigers.

We were told by a source that they still hope at some point this season to be able to get Sharpe back where he can pitch an inning or two of relief on a weekend.

More Grice on the Mound

We also have heard that we can expect to see Caden Grice used more in relief for Clemson down the stretch.

He pitched on the road at Georgia in relief. We can expect to see more of that.

Grice of course has been a terror at the plate this season and has seen limited time on the mound since starting earlier in the season.

These are lean times as a Clemson baseball fan. Certainly makes me appreciate how we were so good for so long.
